VCCA’s long-time Moulin à Nef Resident Director, Cheryl Fortier, will retire on June 30, 2026. We are seeking qualified candidates interested in stepping into this vital role beginning June 1, 2026, ensuring a smooth transition and continuity for the residency program.

Located in the historic village of Auvillar, France, VCCA’s Moulin à Nef is a small, international artist residency program grounded in a spirit of exchange among visiting Fellows, artistic disciplines, and local villagers. Each year, approximately 40 writers, visual artists, and composers live and work on the property, four at a time, in a setting that values focus, hospitality, and community as much as creative practice.

The Resident Director is at the heart of this program. Living on site, they oversee the day-to-day operations of the residency while serving as VCCA’s primary representative in the village. This is a public-facing role that calls for warmth, diplomacy, and genuine engagement, alongside strong administrative and organizational skills. The Resident Director ensures that Fellows feel welcomed and supported, that staff and contractors are well coordinated, and that the residency runs smoothly both behind the scenes and in the public eye.

This position may be especially appealing to working artists or arts professionals who are drawn to a life embedded in creative exchange and community, and who also bring confidence in administration, communication, and problem-solving. Fluency in French is essential, as is comfort managing budgets, supervising staff, and responding calmly to the rhythms and realities of a live-in residency program.

The role is part-time (20 hours per week), year-round, and includes a private on-site apartment — located above the Moulin à Nef office with a living room, kitchen, bath, bedroom, and second studio/office/bedroom space. The Resident Director reports to VCCA’s U.S.-based Director of Artists Services while overseeing a small staff and maintaining a high degree of autonomy in Auvillar.
