VCCA is pleased to offer residencies at many locations around the world as well as residencies at our Mt. San Angelo facility in central Virgina. We are continually developing relationships with international residency programs to broaden the perspectives and opportunities for VCCA Fellows.
Writers, visual artists, and composers who have been in residence at VCCA may apply for an international residency. Fellows who have participated in a VCCA international residency program in the last 3 years (2013, 2014, 2015) are NOT eligible to apply, with the exception of those who have participated in the Moulin à Nef program in France.
You may apply for as many programs as you like. Each requires a separate application and fee. Please note that if you are selected for multiple programs, you will have to choose one program to attend.
When to Apply
Postmark and online deadline for applying is December 1.
The suggested daily contribution for international residencies is $54. Reductions are granted when a true need is demonstrated.
How to Apply
Applications can be made using SlideRoom.
If you prefer to apply using a hard copy you can download the paper application here and apply by mail. Each program that you apply for will require a separate application and fee. For the paper application submit one copy of the application, one copy of requested work samples, résumé, self-addressed stamped envelope for return of work sample, and $40 application fee for each residency requested. All information should be submitted in English.
International Exchange Programs available for 2015
Oberpfälzer Künstlerhaus, in Schwandorf, Germany
Tyrone Guthrie Centre in County Monaghan, Ireland
A one-month residency at Annaghmakerrig, the former estate of Sir Tyrone Guthrie, seventy miles from Dublin. The Centre provides a residential program similar to the VCCA providing artists with private studios and prepared meals in the company of other visiting artists.
City of Salzburg, Austria
A six-week residency from August through mid-September. The residency is a cultural exchange with the city of Salzburg, which provides a combined studio and living space in the Künstlerhaus. Knowledge of the German language is helpful, but not essential. The Künstlerhaus is the center of the city and houses twenty-two artist studios, but only one other residential space. The experience can be somewhat solitary and Fellows are encouraged to bring a friend or partner with them.
St. James Cavalier Centre for Creativity in Valetta, Malta
A six-week residency on the Mediterranean island of Malta. VCCA Fellows are provided a combined studio and living space in downtown Valetta, close to the Centre. Fellows need to be prepared to work in their living space while protecting it with drop cloths. One meal a day is provided at the Centre and there is a stipend of 12 € per day for food. This residency offers the solitude for concentrated work and time for self-directed exploration of this extraordinary island.
Schloss Plüschow in Mecklenburg, Germany
A four-week residency in April in a residential studio facility near the Baltic Sea. VCCA Fellows enjoy a large studio and adjacent studio apartment with bathroom and kitchen facilities in a 17th century chateau housing other artists’ studios. It is close to the port city of Wismar and easy driving distance from the shore. There is a local train station with connections to Hamburg, Lübeck, and Berlin. Fellows are responsible for preparing their own meals. You may arrange for a friend or partner to stay with you for a small fee.
