JoAnn Balingit is a poet and story writer. She served as Delaware's poet laureate from 2008-2015 and continues to work with the Delaware Division of the Arts to coordinate the state's Scholastic Writing Awards and Poetry Out Loud contests. She is an assistant editor for YesYes Books.
JoAnn is the author of Words for House Story (WordTech Editions, 2013), a best books selection at Beltway Poetry, and Forage (2011), awarded the Whitebird Chapbook Prize from Wings Press. Both books were completed during VCCA residencies.
JoAnn’s chapbook of poems, Your Heart and How it Works (Spire Press, 2009) received the 2010 Global Filipino Literary Award for poetry. Her poems appear in Best New Poets, DIAGRAM, Poemeleon, Rhino, Salt Hill, Smartish Pace and Verse Daily. She has received fellowships from The Delaware Division of the Arts, The Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation, and the Bread Loaf Bakeless /Camargo Foundation.
JoAnn was born in Ohio and grew up in Lakeland, Florida, third eldest in a family of twelve children. Mother of four, she lives with her husband and youngest son in Newark, Delaware.
