Traveling by Car

From points north of Washington, D.C., take the Beltway (I-495) toward Silver Spring to I-66. Take Interstate 66 West out of Washington, D.C., to Route 29 South at Gainesville (Exit 43A). Take Route 29 South; bypass Warrenton, Culpeper and Charlottesville. At Amherst, take the 29 Business South/Madison Heights exit. This is also the exit for Sweet Briar College. You will merge onto Business 29 South. The VCCA entrance, San Angelo Drive, is the first left after your pass the Sweet Briar College entrance on the right.

From points south of Virginia, take Route 29 North. Follow the 29 North to Charlottesville signs closely as you approach - and bypass - Lynchburg. Cross the James River and then take the third exit for 29 N Business/Amherst. This is also the exit for Sweet Briar College. Turn left at the stop sign, onto 29 S Business. The entrance to VCCA, San Angelo Drive, is on your left, about one-half mile after you pass the entrance to Sweet Briar College on the right.

Traveling by Train


Take Amtrak to Lynchburg, VA.

Traveling by Plane

Take Delta or US Air Express to Lynchburg, VA. Other carriers serve Roanoke, VA (approx. 70 miles away) and Charlottesville, VA (approx. 50 miles away).

Traveling by Bus

Take Greyhound-Trailways Lines to Lynchburg, Virginia. If you are traveling from New York City, there is a non-stop and very comfortable shuttle bus that runs between New York and Charlottesville, with a van run to Lynchburg. Inclement Weather: Directions to the VCCA Back Entrance

From the South: From points south of Virginia, take Route 29 North, making sure to follow the Route 29 N/Charlottesville signs closely as you pass Lynchburg. Take the 29 North Business/Amherst exit and turn left at the stop sign. Take your first left on Road 661 just opposite the entrance to Sweet Briar College (on the right). Although unmarked, this road becomes Old Stage Road. Take Old Stage Road straight up the hill and after you cross the bridge over the railroad track, take the next right into the VCCA gate. (It is approximately one mile from where you turn onto Road 661 to the back entrance of the VCCA.) As you enter the VCCA the studio barn complex will be on your right. Drive past the barn and the office (on your left) and you will wind your way around to the Elizabeth Coles Langhorne Residence for Fellows on your left.

From the North: After entering Amherst County, take the 29 Business/Madison Heights exit and take your first left on Road 661 just opposite the entrance to Sweet Briar College (on the right). Although unmarked, this road becomes Old Stage Road. Take Old Stage Road straight up the hill and after you cross the bridge over the railroad track, take the next right into the VCCA gate.
