One of the greatest joys in life for an artist is to plant an easel in some exotic place in the world and gradually tune into the unique beauty as it reveals itself during the creation of their painting. This workshop, designed for all levels and open to both oil and pastel artists, will offer just such an experience for its participants.

Utilizing demonstrations, one-on-one sessions, and group instruction, Daniel will take participants step-by-step through the creation of plein-air paintings. His teaching method incorporates all the elements of good drawing—from choosing subject matter, establishing a basic compositional structure and locking in the forms with accents and highlights, to applying the final touches. More than merely describing the landscape, instruction will focus on evoking a sense of mood, atmosphere and the passage of time.

Whether you wish to enrich your painting process, refine your approach, or break into the magical world of plein-air painting, this workshop will encourage, excite and inspire you to reach new heights.

With the streets of the Bronx as his plein air proving ground, Daniel has developed a keen eye for finding provocative compositions that juxtapose the layering of history with the comings and goings of everyday life. This class will explore the beautiful, rustic French town of Auvillar and its environs in this light. A material list will be provided.

Includes: All instruction for seven days, all housing (double occupancy), all breakfasts and lunches, five dinners prepared by VCCA staff, walking tour of Auvillar, one excursion to regional market, access to Maison Vieilhescazes facility adjacent to studio center, pick up and drop off at transportation centers in Toulouse or Agen, transportation with driver for local incidental transportation, optional yoga classes. Single occupancy requires a $340 supplement. Please note that airfare is not included in the registration price, and is the responsibility of the participant.

This workshop is conducted in partnership with the Beverley Street Studio School.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Daniel Hauben attended the Boston Museum School and the School of Visual Arts where he received his BFA. He's since had over thirty solo exhibitions at venues including The Bronx Museum, Pfizer Corporation, and recently at galleries in Germany and Austria. He has concentrated on urban landscape painting and printmaking for over twenty years. Born and raised in the Bronx, Daniel Hauben is acclaimed as the borough's most versatile and prolific painter. Working in both oil paint and chalk pastel, he has spent 25 years capturing the life of the Bronx on canvas or paper, setting up his easel en plein air on street corners and overpasses, under elevated subway trains or in playgrounds. "I'm a landscape painter," he says. "It just so happens that the landscape I paint is most often the Bronx." His work captures the play of light and shadow in the urban environment: the patterns cast on the street by the elevated train trestles, the windows of apartment buildings gilded at sunset, the sharp white heat of a sidewalk in high summer, or the deeply shadowed canyons between tall buildings in late autumn afternoons.
